Nangana Landcare Network engages groups in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges to effectively collaborate on landscape-scale projects which have a positive impact on natural biodiversity.
Nangana Landcare Network formed in 2021. Our member groups are Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater, Friends of the Leadbeater’s Possum, Johns Hill Landcare Group, Monbulk Landcare, and Yarra Valley Equestrian Landcare. Together we bring 104 years of organized environmental experience to the Network and the Yarra Valley Dandenong Ranges region. Since 2017, we have worked together on the landscape-scale project, Beyond Yellingbo, which engaged more than one hundred properties to protect and restore over 300 hectares of high-conservation-value remnant vegetation. Between us we have contributed to the quadrupling of the Helmeted Honeyeater population; to saving the habitat of the Leadbeater’s Possum; and to developing a biological control for Tradescantia fluminensis. We’ve researched dung beetles and behavioural change for weeding. We’ve collected seeds, managed a nursery to grow them and planted many hectares. We envisaged a State Faunal Emblems Reserve which, through many hours of voluntary bureaucratic and committee work, is now the Liwik Barring Landscape Conservation Area. Our major project – C411 COUNTRY – Natural Capital for Generations – has been developed within the UN Four Returns framework. Our twenty-year vision brings together government, business and communities co-create and deliver a vision for resilient landscapes which connect ecology, community values, spirit and culture, commerce and long-term economic sustainability.
